변동성(Volatility) 은 무엇일까요?

변동성 이란, 쉽게 얘기해서 변화가 심한 정도를 뜻하는 것인데요,
만약, 두 학생이 10번 영어 시험을 쳤다고 가정하였을 때,

1번 학생은 매번 80점으로 평균 80점이고, 2번 학생은 80점, 90점, 100점도 나오지만 50점 60점도 나와서 평균 80점 이라고 가정을 해보겠습니다. 이때, 두학생 중에서 누가 더 영어 성적이 좋다고 해야할까요?
아마도 1번 학생이 대체로 무난하다고 모두가 생각할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

 

주식 변동성(Stock volatility) 은 어떻게 해석될 수 있을까요?

위의 예시처럼 보통은 변동성이 낮은 것이 좋다고 인식할 수 있는데요,
하지만, 변동성이 낮다는 말이 주가의 변화의 관계는 동일하다고 할 수는 없습니다. 주가가 위로 올라가고 있어도 변동성은 낮을 수 있기 때문이죠. 그 반대의 경우도 마찬가지라고 할 수 있습니다. 

 

따라서,  변동성이 낮다는 말이 주가의 방향까지 의미하는 것은 아닙니다.

주식시장을 보다보면, 사이드카(Side Car) 발동, 서킷브레이커(Circuit Breaker) 발동이라는 뉴스를 간혹 보곤 하는데요,
이러한 장치들이 대표적인 변동성을 대비한 주가 안정 장치라고 할 수 있습니다.

서킷브레이커 (Circuit Breaker) 주식시장에서 주가가 급락하는 경우 주식매매를 일시 정지하는 제도이며, 영어의 첫 글자를 따서 'CB'라고도 한합니다. 서킷브레이커는 회로차단기에서 유래한 용어이며, 전기 회로에 과부하가 걸리거나 누전, 단락으로 인한 피해를 막기 위해 자동으로 회로를 정지시켰다가, 어느 정도 시간이 지나면 다시 켜는 원래의 기능이 동작하도록 복귀하는 장치입니다.

사이드카 (Side Car) 주식을 대량 거래하는 기관투자자나 외국인이 일정 조건이 되면 자동으로 매도나 매수 주문을 내도록 프로그램을 미리 설정해놓는데, 이런 매매가 되지 않도록 막아버리는 것으로써,선물이 현물에 영향을 미치기 전에 차단하는 예방적 성격이 짙습니다.

위처럼 두 제도는 유사한 개념과 목적을 가지고 있지만,
서킷브레이커가 사이드카보다 더 강력한 조치라고 할 수 있겠습니다.
