그동안 기대했던 것처럼, 미국 제약사 모더나는 자사 개발 코로나19 백신이 3상 임상실험에서 94.5%의 효과를 보였다고 발표하였습니다. 구체적인 데이터는 공개되지 않았고 비록 중간 분석이지만 글로벌 제약사들이 잇달아 긍정적 결과를 내놓으면서 코로나19 백신의 대량 생산 및 접종 시기가 빨라질 수 있다는 기대가 나오고 있는 상황입니다.

모더나는 3만 명의 참가자를 상대로 실시한 3상 시험에서 코로나19에 걸린 95명을 분석한 결과를 발표했는데요.
백신후보 물질을 접종하지 않고 위약(플라시보)을 투여받은 참가자 그룹에서는 90건의 코로나 감염 사례가 발견된 반면, 백신후보 물질을 2회 접종한 그룹에서는 코로나 감염 사례가 5건에 그쳤다는 내용입니다.

모더나 백신, 어떻게 만들어졌을까요?

모더나 백신은 화이자 백신과 마찬가지로 ‘메신저 리보핵산(mRNA)’ 방식으로 만들어졌습니다.
mRNA를 환자 세포에 직접 투여해 특정 단백질을 생성함으로써 단백질의 결핍으로 발생하는 질병을 치료하거나, 감염원에 대항하는 항체를 직접 생산할 수 있도록 유도하게된다고 합니다.

특히, 모더나는 자사 백신을 영상 2~8도에서 30일, 영하 20도에서 6개월 동안 보관할 수 있다고 설명했는데요, 동일한 방식의 화이자 백신의 경우 영하 70도 수준의 초저온 환경에서 보관해야만 효능이 유지되고 냉장고에서 최대 5일간 보관이 가능한 것으로 알려져있습니다.

또한, 모더나는 향후 수주 안에 미 식품의약국(FDA)의 승인을 요청할 것이라며 올해 안에 미국인을 상대로 백신 2000만 회분(총 1000만 명)을 공급할 방침이라고 밝혔습니다.

이로써, 모더나의 백신이 화이자보더 물류, 유통 측면에서 좀더 유리해졌다고 해석해볼 수 있겠네요.

Moder or vaccine, how was it made?

Modena vaccine, like Pfizer's vaccine, is made with the ‘messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)’ method.
It is said that mRNA is directly administered to patient cells to produce specific proteins, thereby treating diseases caused by protein deficiency or direct production of antibodies against infectious agents.

In particular, Modena explained that its vaccine can be stored for 30 days at 2-8 degrees Celsius and 6 months at -20 degrees Celsius. The same type of Pfizer vaccine must be stored in a cryogenic environment at -70 degrees Celsius to maintain its efficacy. It is known that it can be stored for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

In addition, Modena said it will request approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the coming weeks and plans to supply 20 million doses of vaccine (total of 10 million people) to Americans within this year.

With this, it can be interpreted that Modena's vaccine has become more advantageous in terms of logistics and distribution than Pfizer.
